BERA Test (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry)

Best BERA Test in Mumbai: Confirming Your Child's Hearing with Confidence

When there’s any doubt about how well a child can hear, parents deserve a clear, reliable answer — and the earlier, the better. Hearing is the foundation of speech, language, learning, and social connection, so even a hearing difficulty that goes undiagnosed in the early years can quietly hold a child back.

A BERA test gives that clear answer. Also known as Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (or ABR/BAER), it is the gold-standard diagnostic hearing test that checks how sound travels from the ear, along the hearing nerve, all the way to the brain — without your child needing to respond at all.

At Dr. Priti Mhatre’s Centre for Child Development, we offer the best BERA test in Mumbai in a calm, child-friendly setting, performed and interpreted with expert care. Because we specialise in children, your child is comfortable, and you receive accurate results along with a clear plan for what comes next.

  • What is a BERA Test?
  • Why Early Diagnosis Matters for Your Child's Speech
  • When is a BERA Test Needed?
  • How the BERA Test Works Safe, Gentle & Painless

BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) is a safe, painless, and objective hearing test that measures the electrical activity of the hearing (auditory) nerve and brainstem in response to sound.

During the test, soft clicking sounds or tone pips are played through small earphones, while tiny sensor electrodes placed on the scalp and behind the ears record how the nerve pathways respond. These responses are charted as waveforms, which our specialists analyse to assess your child's hearing.

Because the equipment does the measuring, your child doesn't need to do anything — they can simply sleep through it. This is what makes BERA so valuable for newborns, infants, and young children who can't take a traditional, response-based hearing test.

A BERA test can determine:

  • Whether hearing loss is present, in one or both ears
  • The degree of hearing loss — mild to profound
  • The likely type and site of the hearing problem along the nerve pathway
  • The hearing threshold — the softest level of sound the child can detect

It is also able to identify auditory neuropathy — a condition where the inner ear works but the nerve signal doesn't travel properly — which simpler screening tests can miss.

Hearing loss in young children is easy to overlook, because children adapt and rarely complain. Yet undiagnosed hearing difficulties can affect far more than just hearing — they can delay speech and language and influence cognitive, social, and emotional development.

The science is simple: healthy hearing means sound signals travel from the ear, through the nerve, to the brain at the right speed and strength. When that pathway isn't working as it should, a child may struggle to learn sounds, words, and language during the most important developmental years.

This is why timely diagnosis matters so much. Hearing experts recommend that hearing loss be diagnosed by 3 months and support begun by 6 months for the best outcomes. A BERA test is the definitive step that confirms what's happening — so the right treatment, devices, or therapy can begin without delay.

  • A BERA test is usually recommended as the confirmatory step after a newborn hearing screening (OAE), or whenever a clearer diagnosis is needed. Consider a BERA test in Mumbai if:

    • Your baby received a "Refer" (fail) result on a newborn hearing screening
    • Your baby spent time in the NICU, was born prematurely, or had high jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia)
    • There is a family history of congenital hearing loss
    • Your child has craniofacial differences, a history of birth complications, or relevant ear/head conditions
    • Your child is showing speech delay, language delay, or learning difficulties
    • Your child cannot reliably do a standard hearing test due to age or developmental needs
    • You have any concern about how your child responds to sound

Because BERA tests the entire hearing pathway, it's also the test of choice when a more detailed, nerve-level assessment is required.

We've designed the experience to be as calm and stress-free as possible for both child and parent:

  1. Best done during sleep — natural sleep works well for babies; for some older or restless children, mild sedation may be advised so they stay still and relaxed.
  2. Gentle electrode placement — small, soft sensor electrodes are placed on the scalp/forehead and behind the ears (no needles, no discomfort).
  3. Soft sounds are played — clicks or tone pips are delivered through small earphones.
  4. Responses are recorded — the electrodes capture the nerve and brainstem responses as waveforms.
  5. Expert analysis & results — our specialists interpret the waveforms and explain the findings clearly, along with the next steps.

The test is completely painless and free of risk, and typically takes around one to two hours depending on your child.

BERA vs. OAE: How They Work Together

These two tests are partners, not alternatives. An OAE test is a quick screening that checks the inner ear (cochlea) and gives a “Pass” or “Refer.” A BERA test is the diagnostic test that confirms whether hearing loss is truly present and how significant it is, by checking the full nerve pathway to the brain.

In practice, a child who gets a “Refer” on an OAE screening is referred for a BERA test for a definitive answer. Crucially, BERA can also detect hearing problems that OAE alone may miss — which is why it’s considered the most reliable diagnostic hearing test for infants and young children.
